What Is Heart Burn:

Heart burn is the burning sensation we get in our chest and throat. Although it is called heart burn it has nothing to do with our heart. It occurs when the acid within our stomach comes in contact with the lining in our esophagus causing irritation and the burning sensation we feel. It is estimated that around 20% of adults suffer from heart burn at least once a month. It is also estimated that around 10% of adults suffer from severe heartburn.

What Causes Heart Burn:

There are a variety of factors that can cause this acid reflux causing heart burn. They Include:

  • Certain Foods (e.g. chocolate, peppermint etc.)
  • Eating Large Meals Especially Before Bed
  • Pressure On The Stomach
  • Pregnancy 
  • A Hiatal Hernia
  • Stress 
  • Smoking
  • When The Lower Esophageal Sphincter becomes weak
      - (i.e. the valve that stops the acid exiting the stomach),
